Metal Post Privacy Fence in Conway, AR: How Steel Posts and Cedar (or Pine) Pickets Work Together

Walk past this fence and you’d swear it’s a standard wood privacy fence. Western red cedar pickets, cap and trim, that fresh cedar smell you only get from real wood. But there’s something different holding it up. Every post in this fence is galvanized steel, hidden behind the picket line where you’d never think to look.

This is one of our favorite builds to explain, because it solves a real problem for homeowners. You want the warmth and the look of wood. You also don’t want to be replacing rotted, twisted posts in ten to twelve years. A metal post privacy fence gives you both, and once you understand how it goes together, the logic makes a lot of sense.

Here’s how we build them.

The Post You Don’t See

The first question we get is almost always the same one: if I use metal posts, am I going to see them? Are they going to stick out like a sore thumb against the wood?

Short answer, no.

The post sits behind the picket line, not in front of it. From the front face of the fence, the side your neighbors and anyone driving by sees, there’s nothing but cedar. Clean picket run, top to bottom. If you look at the fence from a sharp angle you might catch a sliver of the post edge through the gap between pickets, but that’s it. It reads as wood.

On the back side, where you’d traditionally see the post and rails on a standard privacy fence, we run a picket over the post face and screw it down. That covers the steel completely and gives you a clean look on the inside of the fence too. So you end up with a fence that looks like cedar from both sides, with a steel backbone doing the structural work.

That camouflage is the whole design intent. You’re not compromising the aesthetic to get the strength.

We Set Steel Posts the Same Way We Set Wood

There’s a common assumption that metal posts mean some completely different install process. They don’t. The layout and setting stage looks exactly like a wood post fence.

We lay the fence line out, run our string lines to keep everything true, then dig and set every post in a concrete footing. Same as we’d do with a 4×4. Then the concrete has to set up, cure, and harden before anything else happens. We come back after that to do the framing and the pickets.

That waiting period matters more than people expect. Rushing back to hang rails on green concrete is how you end up with posts that shift and a fence line that goes wavy on you two years down the road. Central Arkansas soil moves with our wet and dry cycles, and a properly cured footing is what keeps the post where you put it.

Once the concrete is solid, we set our elevation and trim the posts to height. These posts get cut to fit the finished top line of the fence, so any extra gets trimmed off up top.

Framing It Out: Rails, Spacing, and the Details That Matter

This is where the metal post system differs a little from wood, and where the small stuff really shows up in the finished product.

Marking the rails. The posts come with reference marks stamped on them for rail placement, and those are useful if you want them. We prefer to set our own marks. We find the top line, then measure down from the top to lay out each rail. Measuring from a single reference point keeps every post consistent instead of stacking small errors down the run.

How many rails. On a 6 foot fence we run three rails: top, middle, and bottom. Taller or shorter fences change that count. The goal is spacing them out as evenly as we reasonably can so the pickets get support across their full length.

Our numbers on a 6 foot cap and trim. Measuring down from the top, the mid rail lands at 32 inches and the bottom rail at 65 inches. That puts the bottom rail about three and a half to four inches up from the bottom of the picket.

That bottom rail height is worth pausing on, because it’s one of the most common mistakes we see on fences built by folks who are guessing. When the bottom rail sits too high, the last several inches of every picket have nothing behind them. Those unsupported picket ends are the first thing to cup, curl, and kick out. Get the rail down low enough to actually support the picket, but not so low that it’s sitting in the dirt collecting moisture. Three to four inches is the sweet spot.

Cutting the rails. The 2x4s get cut to fit from the inside face of one post to the inside face of the next. Then the rail goes up against the post and gets screwed through the pre-drilled holes in the steel.

Screw length. We use an inch and a half screw here, and that number is not arbitrary. It’s long enough to bite through the full thickness of the 2×4 and hold, but short enough that it will not poke out the front face of your rail where it’d catch a picket or show. Go longer and you’ve created a problem you can’t undo without pulling the whole rail. It’s a small detail that separates a fence that’s built right from one that’s just built.

From there it’s the same finish work as any cap and trim fence. Cap goes on, pickets run, trim goes up, back side gets its cover picket. Done.

Steel vs. Wood Posts: The Honest Tradeoffs

We build plenty of fences on wood posts and we’re not going to tell you they’re a bad choice. But here’s the straight comparison.

What steel gives you:

  • Strength. These posts are rated to hold up past 70 mph winds. In a part of the state where we get real spring storms, that’s not a small thing.
  • Dimensional stability. Steel doesn’t bow, warp, or twist. A wood post can and often will, especially in the first couple of seasons as it dries out. When a post twists, it takes your rails and pickets with it.
  • Longevity. Wood posts in the ground eventually rot. That’s not a maintenance question, it’s a timeline question. Over years and decades, the buried portion decays and the post fails.

What steel doesn’t give you:

  • Immortality. Galvanized steel is coated, not invincible. Over a very long horizon with constant water and soil contact, that galvanizing can break down and the post can begin to rust. It’s dramatically slower than wood rot, but it’s not never.
  • The lowest price. Steel posts cost more up front than a 4×4. You’re buying the back half of the fence’s life.

The way we frame it for homeowners: your pickets are the part you’ll eventually refresh anyway. Your posts are the part you really don’t want to touch again. Putting the durable material where the hard work happens is a good trade.

What Bradford Recommends

If you’re building a wood privacy fence and you plan to be in the house a while, we’d point you toward metal posts. The cost difference shows up once, at install. The benefit shows up every year after that, in a fence line that stays straight and posts that don’t need digging out.

A few specific recommendations:

  1. Go steel on long, exposed runs. Open backyards, fences facing prevailing wind, anything without tree cover or structures breaking the wind. That’s where post failure and leaning show up first.
  2. Go steel if you love the wood look but hate maintenance. You get the real wood look, with the structural piece handled.
  3. Wood posts are still a fine call on shorter runs, protected areas, or when budget is the deciding factor. We’ll build it right either way and tell you honestly what we’d do on our own property.
  4. Don’t mix and match randomly. If you’re going steel, go steel on the whole run. Mixing post types across one fence line gives you two different rates of movement, and the fence will show it.

Whichever way you go, the details we walked through above are what separate a fence that looks good on day one from one that still looks good on year fifteen. Cured footings, rails measured from a consistent reference, a bottom rail low enough to do its job, and the right screw length.
